Behind the Design: Chrome Wing Collection

Behind the Design: Chrome Wing Collection

Every collection has an origin story, but the Chrome Wing line is one we get asked about more than almost anything else in the shop. Here's the real version.

The Spark

The idea started, honestly, on a napkin. It was a night game, the kind where the stadium lights hit the lower bowl in a way that made every bit of silver and chrome in the crowd look like it was glowing. Someone on our design team sketched a rough wing shape with reflective striping before the fourth quarter was even over, and that sketch sat in a notebook for months before we did anything with it.

Turning a Sketch Into a Material

The hard part was never the concept — it was finding a reflective trim that looked premium in daylight and actually caught light the way we wanted under the stadium lights at night, without looking like safety-vest material. We went through a dozen different reflective yarns and coatings before landing on the chrome-reflective wing striping that made it into the final Chrome Wing Alternate Jersey.

Sampling, Rejecting, Sampling Again

Early samples ran too heavy — the reflective backing added stiffness that killed the drape of the jersey. We went back to the mill three separate times to get a lighter-weight application that kept the visual impact without sacrificing feel. That's also where the heavyweight embroidered crest came from — once the striping was dialed in, a printed crest looked cheap next to it, so we upgraded that too.

Why It's Limited

The reflective trim we landed on is genuinely more expensive to produce and harder to source in volume, which is part of why the Chrome Wing collection runs as a limited seasonal release instead of a year-round staple. It also means every piece feels like it's actually worth holding onto — a collector-grade item, not something that gets buried in a drawer by February.

What Came Next

The finish tested so well that we pulled elements of it into other products — the Chrome Wing Knit Scarf uses the same striping language in a woven jacquard-knit accessory, built for fans who want the look without the full jersey price point.

What We Learned

The biggest lesson from Chrome Wing: the best product ideas usually come from a specific, almost dumb moment — a napkin sketch under stadium lights — and the actual work is just refusing to ship it until the execution matches how good the idea felt in the moment. That's still how we approach every new collection.
